A reading

Jordan Cahill has been making photographs for over a decade, though he would be the first to tell you he never set out to become a photographer. The camera came later, a tool that caught up with a way of seeing he had always carried.

Based in Northamptonshire, Jordan's work takes him far from home: the rain-dark closes of Edinburgh, the bleached coastal light of the Canary Islands, the sacred geometry of Mecca at pilgrimage, the granite weight of New York at dusk. Each series is drawn from life as he has lived it, not commissioned, not constructed, but noticed. His archive is a record of everywhere he has been and everything he couldn't walk past without stopping.

What connects images so geographically varied is a consistent quality of attention. Jordan photographs stillness inside movement: a lone boat adrift on an impossible blue, fog pooling in a mountain valley at first light, two hikers made small by a winter hillside. His colour work is saturated and deliberate; his monochrome work strips a scene to its essential tension. In both modes, the frame is never accidental.

He has no gallery representation and maintains no public profile. These prints are among the first time his work has been offered for sale. They are, in every sense, primary.
