Henley
The Henley Royal Regatta is the best-known rowing event in the world, and arguably the most traditional. For six days, the River Thames becomes a straight knockout course lined by striped blazers, flowing Pimm's, and extremely strict enclosure rules.

What it actually feels like.
Knockout on the Thames
Unlike modern multi-lane regattas, Henley is a head-to-head knockout competition. Two crews race up a narrow, boomed course that takes them past thousands of spectators. There is nowhere to hide, and a single mistake is terminal.
The inner sanctum
The Stewards' Enclosure is situated on the Berkshire bank, perfectly placed for the finish line. It is notoriously difficult to join, with a waiting list stretching over a decade. Inside, mobile phones are frowned upon, hemlines are checked, and the atmosphere is delightfully insulated.
Rowing, rosé, and rules you didn't write.
