Art Basel Paris and Paris Photo put art and photography on the autumn calendar. Confirmed dates and practical questions for looking at photographs before buying.

There are two distinct dates to put in the diary. Art Basel Paris lists public days from 23 to 25 October 2026 at the Grand Palais. Paris Photo lists 12 to 15 November 2026 at the same venue. They are separate fairs, with separate tickets and programmes.

Paris Photo: next edition

Choose the visit you want.

Check the exhibitor list and programme before choosing a day. Give yourself a short list of things to see, then leave room to change your mind. The photograph that stays with you may not be the one you came for.

Art Basel’s preview days are separate from its public dates. Admission arrangements and opening times belong to the organisers, so check the official pages before booking travel. An event date is not a ticket.

Start with the photograph.

Look before asking the price. Which image brings you back across the room? What changes when you see it at its actual size? A screen is useful preparation, but a photograph in front of you can answer different questions.

Notice the surface, the scale and how much space the image asks for. If you can, look from a few paces away and then closer. Take a note of the artist, work and gallery, and ask before taking photographs.

Ask what you are buying.

Ask the gallery for the title, date, printing process, paper and edition terms. Check whether dimensions refer to the image, sheet or framed object. Ask what is included in the price and how framing and delivery will be handled.

A limited edition needs a clear definition: which size or format does the limit cover, and what documentation accompanies the work? Do not let a number replace the reason you wanted the photograph in the first place.

Poster or fine art print: what to check

The house guide to fine art photography paper

Two paragliders, one red and one orange, fly above a jagged snow-covered mountain range under a wide blue sky.

Back at the house, Room to Fly by Emma Tysinger gives you a wide composition to consider at different sizes. This is a work from our collection, not a claim of participation in either Paris fair.

Bring the decision home.

Write down the finished dimensions before imagining the work above a sofa or beside a door. A paper template on your own wall can answer the size question more honestly than a quick guess on a fair stand. Give yourself time to compare what you have seen.
